5 Ways to Meet People in Tokyo

Life as a gaijin in Japan can be very lonely. If you’re male, you risk being called a pervert; for females, it may be a risk to your safety.

Coming up to other gaijins may come across as you being weird (unless you’re at a bar or club). More so, if you can’t speak the language well, it may get difficult for you to communicate and make local friends.

So where do you go to meet people the safe or non-creepy way??

Here are 5 WAYS:

1.  Join groups or communities.  Do you like playing a certain sport? Like hiking? Are you into ecology?

2.  Learn a local art or craft.  Do you want to learn Ikebana? Or perhaps experience a Japanese Tea ceremony?

3.  Teach English privately.  You can make extra cash and make friends while doing so. However, I stress that classes should always be done in a public area like a café or restaurant. There have been cases of death and rape (sorry to be a bit morbid but it’s true).

4.  Party!  – Pretty much what people do in Tokyo, work hard and party harder. A fun and interesting way to meet people.

5.  Submit to magazine classifieds ads. Oh, please don’t do this. But if it floats ya boat, then….

Here are some magazines and websites that can provide you with more info on how and where to meet people, groups and clubs, events, and almost everything happening in Tokyo.

Personal Experience:  I play soccer and futsal so I looked for teams that I could join. They were easy to find and soon I was playing with 3 or 4 teams. A bit on, we would all also hang-out for dinner and drinks.
